Iman Opens Up About David Bowie, a New Perfume and More By Julien Hunter
David Bowie lovers rejoiced last year when the late legend’s widow Iman got a new fragrance by new perfumer Henri Garcia. But the 57-year-old model and entrepreneur is now sharing more about her fragrance, available at Harrods, Selfridges and Net-a-Porter this April.
Opens up to the Guardian about her new project, Iman reveals that she was eager to push the limits with the scent because it captures her personality. “I’m a little ahead of the game and have been making perfumes for years. This particular scent, Ours, evokes my soul. All my fragrances say something about who I am,” she says. “I used a more sophisticated tone, which will hopefully appeal to a wide range of people.”
The shoot was a very personal one, however, with photographer Joe Powell capturing Iman in her style. “I wore a lot of black and white because the colour matched the contours of my face – and we shot in black and white!” explains Iman.
Iman is looking forward to building on her very successful beauty and makeup collection. “I was very clear with Henri about what he should do with the fragrance. I didn’t want a younger, sexy scent that will compete with our other collaborations,” she explains. “I wanted something that had depth. I am still very much part of my own collection, I like doing the makeup and the jewellery, but I wanted to do something that was different.”
He was open to the idea of collaborating with her as they have had a fantastic relationship ever since David first introduced her to fragrance. “Afterwards he was like, ‘David, I think you should do your own thing.’ We did a collaboration for one of our fragrances together in the past, but this is the first time we collaborated on a fragrance. He loved it. And since he passed away it’s been great,” she says.
As well as being an artist and entrepreneur, Iman also happens to be a mother and grandmother. “The last year has been quite soul-searching,” she says. “I needed time alone and then I had some great friends who were always there. As an artist, I need a lot of solitude. I was in an amazing, peaceful place as I was working on this, so it was very nice to be together with the family.”
In terms of the children, Bowie has a son called Duncan Jones, who is now the director of Hugo Weaving’s forthcoming film ‘Mute’, and a daughter Lexi Jones. The family are in the middle of moving after Bowie bought their current home, which has a huge garden in Hertfordshire. “I often get asked what will I do once I’m an older woman, and my answer is to create as much as I can,” she continues. “I want to use my experiences to create something new. It’s so important to feel you have a life, and that you’re still alive.”
