The start of the 2019 Pittsburgh’s RailRiders season is quickly approaching. The RailRiders are finally one game into a series with the York United on Monday afternoon, and the Rumble Ponies are coming off a pair of surprising performances. In just his first MLB game of the year, Jacob Lindgren blanked Philadelphia over six innings in a 7-2 win over the Phillies. Then on Saturday, Brian Fuentes completed a four-pitcher complete game shutout against Philadelphia, picking up his third save of the season in the process.
York United’s offense has shown signs of life, putting up eight runs in its last two games, but the RailRiders will look to get the win with ease, especially since second baseman Cody Ackerman homered in the first game of the weekend series.
In the first game on Sunday, outfielder Bruce Caldwell batted 3-for-3 with three runs scored and has now put up five runs in his last two games. The American League Rookie of the Year also walked twice, his third such walk of the season. Bruce also has two home runs and five RBI in his last four games. Cody may have contributed to a dramatic switch at shortstop, as James Ramsey tripled in the first inning and then scored on a leadoff double from shortstop Anthony Misch. Ramsey finished the game with three hits.
Of course, the RailRiders will still try to figure out how to win. Before starting his first game, starter Raynel Espinal gave up seven runs in three innings against Erie. On Monday, Ricky Knapp will be tasked with doing some damage control against York United and its star pitcher, Fernando Tirado. Tirado currently owns a 0.59 ERA, but a 16.12 ERA against the RailRiders the last time they faced him.
The RailRiders’ starting pitchers have struggled against York United the last two years, entering Tuesday’s game with a 1.81 ERA against York United and a 15.88 ERA against the Rumble Ponies.
Stefan Hoyt (1-0, 1.54 ERA), left-hander Justin Thomas (0-1, 5.27 ERA), and Raynel Espinal (1-0, 4.97 ERA) will all be featured in a doubleheader on Tuesday. The first game against York United will start at 12:35 p.m. at Peoples Natural Gas Field. The second game will start at 7:05 p.m. at Peoples Natural Gas Field.
